Financing Gender Equality Roadmap: CSW to SotF to FfD4 to B+30
Briefing at the NGO CSW68 Forum on the occasion of the UN Commission on the Status of
Women 68th
Date: Wednesday, March 13th, 4:30 – 6pm
Location: 777 UN Plaza, Main Floor
Church Center of the United Nations
Background
The 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), the annual review of
the Beijing Platform for Action agreement and priority themes on gender equality and
women’s empowerment, will take place from March 11 to 22, 2024. The theme for this session
is “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and
girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender
perspective.” During this session, representatives from Member States, UN entities, ECOSOC-
accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and feminists/women’s organizations will
contribute to discussions on critical issues related to gender equality.
The intersections with the UN ECOSOC Financing for Development Forum 2024 are crucial.
Both forums recognize the importance of financing mechanisms in achieving sustainable
development goals. By aligning efforts, they can enhance gender-responsive financing
strategies, promote inclusive economic growth, and advance women’s empowerment globally.
The CSW68 and the Financing for Development Forum provide opportunities for collaboration,
policy coherence, and innovative solutions to address gender disparities and promote
women’s rights in economic and social development.
Additionally, the UN Summit of the Future and the Fourth International Conference on
Financing for Development play pivotal roles in shaping global development agendas. The UN
Summit of the Future, scheduled for an unspecified date, will likely address emerging
challenges and opportunities, including gender equality. Meanwhile, the Fourth International
Conference on Financing for Development, anticipated in 2025, will build upon the legacy of
previous conferences, aiming to mobilize resources and foster sustainable development
worldwide. These interconnected events underscore the urgency of collaborative action to
create more awareness and increase outreach to organizations, networks and coalitions
beyond the usual targeted entities.
Moreover, women’s and feminist constituencies following the CSW process are generally
unaware of and lacking information about the financing for development (FfD) process.
Increasing awareness in the key constituency is critical to further deepen thematic issues on
women’s poverty, the feminization of poverty, financing for gender equality and the impacts
of the FfD agenda (debt, trade, tax, macroeconomic policy and global governance).
A briefing with high level key players in these critical processes will bring much needed
attention and awareness-raising to FfD, the SotF in preparation for the International
Conference on Financing for Development and its linkages with the Beijing+30, the priority
theme of the CSW69 in 2025.
